How do you maintain a positive attitude when all you want to do is lose it? Times come when you are angry because of situations that happen around you.

One common negative emotion you may feel is anger. Actions guide attitudes. Negative attitudes that may follow anger include but are not limited to condescending, disgust, hate, vengeance, sarcasm.

Which behaviour would people likely not expect? At that moment when all you want to do is hit someone in the face or do something that will make them get hurt, do the opposite.  In the long run, it will be good for your mental health.

Maintaining a positive attitude does not mean that you tolerate the unbearable or that you always suffer in silence. It does not mean that you will not feel any negative emotions.

Maintaining a positive attitude means being realistic and without losing your joy or hope. So, what can you do when you feel you cannot take it anymore and want to lash out, attack someone whether verbally or physically? When your wrath is becoming unbearable and it seems near impossible to maintain positivity, here is what you can do.

Repress your actions.

Some people could cause you so much pain that you become bitter and vengeful. According to psychiatrists and psychotherapists, it is harmful to suppress such feelings for long since they will damage your psychological and physical health.

You can always release the negative feelings, but you do not have to do that right there and then when they come. Walk away and cool down first. Control yourself from taking compulsive actions. Just because you feel like reacting angrily, it does not mean you should do it. Doing it could give you five minutes of feeling good, but it will not last forever. Soon enough someone else will hurt you.

If you get into the habit of insulting people that hurt you, fighting them or quarrelling with them, you will lose respect because of erratic behaviour. If you are someone that is heading to success and you seek to achieve a certain purpose in your life, repress your actions. Entertaining drama in your life will only slow you down and distract you from your goals.

Assess yourself.

People see easily what is wrong with the other person- how the other person has hurt them, and the mistakes that they have made. Faultfinding is easier done on other people because you can hope to look better than them or appear like they are so bad. Have you ever taken time to assess yourself honestly with no bias at all? In a given circumstance, the problem could be you.

Therefore, before you act on your negative attitude, assess yourself first, and make sure you are in the clear. An honest evaluation of yourself may reveal that you are angry at other things but letting it out on another person. The person could have done a mistake but first, assess the level of your responsibility in it. To maintain a positive attitude, think deeply about a time when you were in a similar position before you react.

Regulate your tone.

It is not unusual to have conflicts, but it is how you deal with the conflicts that determine the results of your psychological state. Most people raise their voices when they disagree with someone. It is a condescending attitude to make the ‘opponent’ feel like they have no say in the matter and that you are controlling the situation.

However, the opposite behaviour can work better. Keep your tone conversational, no matter how angered or frustrated you are. Keep your voice down. A soft tone will calm an atmosphere of anger quickly. Hence, the negativity in the air will not last for a long time.

The idea is to master the skill of keeping calm when experiencing negative emotions or situations. Analyze the situation and see how your behaviour will help you or ruin you. It is not a simple thing to think before you leap, but given enough practice, it can become a useful habit.
